Chess is a design and development centre whose core disciplines are software and hardware design. Chess takes operational responsibility for the developed systems and products. In the case of software this entails keeping the system or service operational for the duration of its life cycle, including maintenance and further development. In the case of hardware this entails the production and supply of the desired product, and also maintenance and repair (supply chain). Chess is a company that is strong in this multidisciplinary ICT environment. It is one of the largest in the Netherlands with regard to the combination of design and operations. Over its twenty-year existence it has built a position in both the industrial and financial markets. Trust is an important value for the company, with respect to both clients and employees. On the basis of this trust we can realize successful innovations. Innovation is the distinguishing feature of Chess’s image. Therefore Chess realizes the designs on a project basis. The added value consists not only of implementing projects but also, increasingly, the supply of products or operational services and system maintenance. Chess calls this its ‘lever on knowledge’; meaning that keeping the system running or supplying the product, offers long-term added value. That’s why Chess is a company with a turnover in excess of the typical 100,000 Euros per employee in the ICT sector. We take responsibility for the full existence of the product/system; we call this ‘life-cycle management’. The advantage to the client is the continuity of the product/system and services, according to a fixed agreement. Chess has set itself apart from the rest of the Dutch market by continuously responding to trends in ICT, and as such it occupies a unique position as the innovator of many Dutch businesses. Various cross-sections can be shown, but what is noticeable is that Chess’s clients include large OEMs from the Dutch top 50, as well as niche market leaders of various sizes. The large OEMs of 20 years ago have become smaller in most cases. This is why Chess has actively concentrated on players with a leading market position as well as their major clients. Although Chess is a service provider, it has developed a stronger market policy in recent years. Whereas service providers often take on the market colours of their clients, Chess has increasingly chosen its own direction. Its role as product developer supports this. Selecting specific domains and target markets helps Chess to establish itself internationally. |
